Low Current Protection Settings in VEICHI Solar Drives

Operating a pump without sufficient water is one of the leading causes of mechanical damage and reduced equipment life in solar-powered irrigation systems.

To prevent this, VEICHI Solar Drives include a Low Current Protection, also known as Dry Run Protection, which is one of the most important safety functions for protecting pumps and ensuring reliable system operation.

In this episode of the System Solar Power Energy Systems technical content series, we explain the operating principles of parameters F14.17, F14.18, and F14.19 and their role in configuring dry run protection.

Parameter F14.17 – Low Current Threshold

Parameter F14.17 is used to define the minimum operating current based on the pump’s no-load current.

This threshold should be configured according to the application requirements and the operating characteristics of the pump.

When the motor current drops below the configured value, the drive activates the low current protection function to prevent dry running.

A properly configured F14.17 parameter helps to:

* Protect the pump against dry running,

* Prevent unnecessary motor stress,

* Improve overall system safety,

* Extend equipment service life.

Parameter F14.18 – Monitoring Time

Parameter F14.18 defines how long the drive monitors the low current condition before activating protection.

When the motor current falls below the threshold defined in F14.17, the drive does not trigger protection immediately.

Instead, it continues monitoring the condition for the duration specified by F14.18.

If the low current condition persists after the monitoring period has elapsed, the protection function is activated.

This approach helps prevent unnecessary shutdowns caused by temporary current fluctuations.

Parameter F14.19 – Restart Delay Time

Parameter F14.19 defines the waiting period before the drive attempts to restart after low current protection has been activated.

When the pump enters dry run protection, the drive does not restart immediately.

Instead, it remains in standby mode for the time specified in F14.19.

This delay allows sufficient time for:

* Water levels to recover,

* Wells or storage tanks to refill,

* Normal operating conditions to return.

As a result, unnecessary start-stop cycles are minimized, improving system stability.

Why Low Current Protection Matters

Dry running is one of the primary causes of premature wear and reduced performance in pumping systems.

The low current protection function continuously monitors motor current, detects potential dry run conditions, and automatically protects the system before mechanical damage occurs.

Correct parameter configuration significantly improves the safety, reliability, and service life of both the motor and the pump.

Conclusion

When used together, parameters F14.17, F14.18, and F14.19 provide a comprehensive low current (dry run) protection strategy for VEICHI Solar Drives.

Proper configuration prevents dry running, enhances system safety, reduces maintenance costs, and extends equipment lifespan.
